We have been teaching quality traditional martial arts to residents of Carlsbad, and North County, at our full time center since 1992. Literally thousands of Carlsbad/North County residents have benefited from our programs during the last 15 years. We have been approved to teach within the Carlsbad & Oceanside school districts, and Sensei Paul is the sole Californian representative for the Okinawa Goju-Ryu So-honbu (international governing body for Goju-Ryu karate-do). The main dojo (studio) is located in Carlsbad Village, a stone's throw from the Beach. We have a satellite dojo in Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch for Children, and a Branch Dojo in Kent, Washington www.gojukent.com

Philosophy

Without philosophy, Martial Arts would be little more than street fighting. At Goju Karate Center we teach and emphasize a series of basic life skills that challenge our students throughout not only their Martial Arts training but also their everyday lives. Junior students are taught to be respectful and polite toward their parents, siblings, teachers and elders. They are also taught the importance of education, and doing their best in school. Our teenage and young adult students are taught to set

achievable goals and that hard work does have its rewards. Through the Martial Arts they become

more confident and develop an attitude of self-reliance. This increase in confidence enables them

to better cope with issues of peer pressure and helps them make correct choices.

“The ultimate goal of the art of karate is not in victory or defeat, but rather in the perfection of the character of its participants.”

-Gichin Funakoshi

The History of GKC

Goju Karate Center opened under the direction of Sensei Paul Enfield. Since that time, we have progressed to become one of the most honored and respected studios in Southern California.

The Goju Karate Center began in a backyard in Encinitas, CA. in summer 1992.  We practiced outside on a lawn in the summer with just a handful of dedicated students.  As the weather turned wet and cold and the light faded earlier each evening, we moved into the garage where we practiced on carpet remnants laid over a concrete floor.  Some months later we raised money and installed a hard wood floor to give us 350sq.ft. of floor space.  Our numbers began to grow and the need to expand was evident.  Concurrently, Jazzercise Inc. gave us the opportunity to teach children's classes at their International headquarters in Carlsbad Village. From a modest six students in the first month, we built a following of sixty students ranging in ages from 3 to 12 years.  The adult class moved to Carlsbad in the summer of 1994.  Finally after months of searching and with the extraordinary help of numerous persons, we were able to open the Goju Karate Center in our current location on September 6, 1994. The dojo has continued to flourish since this time (with over 200 students at our current location), and we have built a reputation as one of the premier martial arts schools in Southern California, both in traditional karate and in the competative arena. Goju Karate Center has taught within the Carlsbad Unified School district; has a karate program at Fairbanks Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe, and has an affiliate branch dojo in Kent, Washington (Goju Karate Center Kent), and Anza (Mountain Goju Karate Center).
