Some Testimonials from our Members:

Goju Karate Center is proud to have been part of the local community since 1992. We deeply appreciate the dedication of the thousands of students and their families that have passed through our doors.

Our six year old daughter has been taking Karate classes at the Goju Karate Center for two years. Karate has been such a positive experience for not only our daughter but also our family. Our daughters confidence level grows with every class as the Karate instructors, Paul and Michelle, concentrate and encourage the students by focusing on the positive behaviors rather then the negative.

The kids benefit both physically and mentally as they are taught valuable life skills such as self-control, listening, follow through, and respect for others. These lessons are so important to our family because they reinforce the life skills we teach in our home. The Goju Karate Center is an extension of our family values and an excellent support system.

In fact, I was so impressed with the benefits that my daughter receives from Karate that I joined the Goju Karate Center as well.  Of course, it does add to the family fun as my daughter tells me that her belt level is higher then mine…  For now.

Dear Michelle,

I want to thank you for your presentation today. It was one of the most professional and helpful presentations that my students have received this year and possibly any year of their life. Your delivery was much appreciated in that my students had fun and also learned about self-protection tactics that they can use in their lifetime. You and Julio were amazing in attending to the students learning correct techniques and being respectful in their doing so…

They enjoyed the activities and your skill at organizing them to do so was brilliant and efficient. Your hand out and life story was moving and the students will carry that away from class and reflect on the importance of knowing self-defense and how to stay safe in every place they travel…

You are truly a valued member of the Carlsbad community and I am indebted to you and Julio for spending your time with my Tough, Toned and Terrific PE Class at Carlsbad High School.

– Sincerely,

Jane McGhee (Carlsbad High School)

Attending Goju Karate Center over the past three-plus years has been an enriching and confidence building experience for our son Ethan. We immediately saw benefits—besides a good workout—that karate provides as Sensei Paul & Sensei Michelle consistently stress important life lessons, including respect, commitment, working toward a goal and using good manners. Another byproduct is the improvement in focus, which is a plus most parents can appreciate.

Ethan remains dedicated to his classes at GKC, at an age when his interests do come and go in other areas. He would tell you his foremost achievement has been earning acceptance into the exclusive Black Belt Club. Aside from requiring that he “step up” his commitment and proficiency, this honor has given him direct access to the best of the young students at GKC. Ethan participates in several sports (e.g., basketball, swimming, running) and at some time or another he has always been frustrated by the kids who do not pay attention or work to improve their performance. This is never the case at GKC. In particular, we see the teenagers in BBC and all we can say is we want Ethan to exhibit the levels of confidence, dedication and skill demanded to succeed in karate.

He proudly keeps all his previous belts in a display rack next to his bed with his BBC invitation framed above. Many a time we have seen him in his room practicing a kata in front of the mirrored closet doors.

We are very proud of Ethan’s accomplishments at GKC. We know from the growing sizes of the classes and the steady stream of Tiny Tigers that the dojo is strong and other parents are experiencing the benefits we appreciate.

We feel extremely lucky that our children are training with Sensei Paul and Sensei Michelle.   We are constantly being complimented on the behavior of our children and we know that the training that they have received is a cornerstone in their foundation.  Our children are focused, self-disciplined, and aware.  We have three boys who are rough and tumble and very strong, physically and mentally.  Our boys play hard but never hit each other out of anger.  We have watched my now 12 year old walk away from a fight, because he had the confidence to do so.  The teachers at goju karate center are the perfect balance of knowing when to critique and when to praise.  They have the ability to correct children in a positive way.  All three of our boys are excited to go to karate and our committed to achieving their Black Belt.

We have been with the Dojo for six years and have participated in The Tiny Tiger Program, The Little Dragon Program, and now have our two oldest in The Black Belt Club.  Our oldest is now testing for his junior Black Belt and our two youngest are training to follow.

I have been training with the Goju Ryu Karate Center for a little over a year now.  Class is a very comprehensive workout, probably the most challenging one that I’ve ever experienced.  But even that sort of pales for me when I contrast it to the challenge of learning and memorizing these complex and beautiful movements and forms.  It’s been many years since I’ve had to work at integrating body, mind and spirit in this way.  And then there is the environment of the dojo – the spirit of respect for self and others is very much built into this Okinawan traditional style.   Sensei Paul’s teaching style – and Sensei Michelle’s as well – respects and honors earnest effort as much as accomplishment.

But probably THE most wonderful discovery I have made since beginning classes at GKC is ‘sho shin.’  The concept has been explained to me as “the beginner’s mind,” and it’s about an open mind without agenda.  It is so refreshing to revisit this state of mind for a few hours every week.  I take more of it home with me, too, with each week of training that passes.  This training has been very transformative for me, and I sincerely encourage everyone to take advantage of this unique and valuable treasure here in Carlsbad Village.

We have had the pleasure of being a part of the Goju Karate Center for over 10 years…Blake and Dean have both had the opportunity to compete Nationally and through this, have both gained a wealth of knowledge, confidence and life-changing experiences!  The knowledge and life’s lessons they have enjoyed under Sensei Paul’s tutelage has been priceless and continues to benefit both of them in real life experiences…

Thanks for all you do!

– The La Grange Family

My son, Gavyn, has been taking karate with Sensei’s Paul and Michelle for two years. When he first started in karate he couldn’t sit still and wasn’t able to focus for long periods of time. From the very first class the sensei’s have taught self discipline, respect for yourself and others, focus, determination and many other great life lessons.

Gavyn has grown and changed so much from his karate. He has gained self confidence, better physical control, better control over his impulses and has definitely learned to sit still and focus! The program at Goju Karate is a wonderful program that I recommend to all my friends and family.

I love to see the positive changes my son has been able to make through the guidance he’s had at Goju. It’s great to see his cool roundhouse kick too!

… Our Kids (Robbie and Jasmine) have really benefited from the training at your studio. It is nice to see positive changes in them both. Robbie’s teachers at school commented on how much more focused he is and able to concentrate better too. I know it is in large part the lessons he is getting from you. You are patient and caring with our kids and the other kids in class too. You are a good example of praising right behaviors and gently correcting disruptive ones. I choose for our kids teachers to have the patience and tolerance each of you have for the students you teach.

Thank for really putting your heart into your work, it shows!
